The goal of any individual or organization using a website to market their products and services is to get potential customers to locate their website amidst the huge number of competitors, which can be in the millions.

Competition in the world of internet marketing is different than that of traditional retail marketing, in that internet marketers are competing for qualified customers via website traffic generation. In order to maximize website traffic generation, internet marketers must “Get into the Heads” of their potential customers and find out exactly what they are typing into the Search Engines in order to find their products – in other words, laser targeted keywords.

Furthermore, in order to reduce the competition and maximize website traffic generation, IM’s must find popular long tail keywords, or what are often referred to as key phrases. The shorter the keyword, the greater the number of search results and the longer the keyword phrase, the lesser the number of search results. Search results on the internet equate to competition.

For example, at the time of this writing, a Google Search for the word “piano” provided 171,000 results. However, a search for the phrase “how to play the piano” provided 112,000 results. Although this example is somewhat simplified, it does make the point that the longer and more targeted the keyword or phrase, competition will be reduced, and website traffic generation will be maximized.

It is frustrating to see that many internet marketers spend so much time writing articles, setting up blogs, participating in forums, and ultimately developing expensive and eye appealing websites, with no knowledge of the effect that a small amount of keyword research has on website traffic generation.
